Rapper Yo Gotti’s brother, Anthony “Big Jock” Mims, was killed in a shooting on Saturday, the Memphis Police Department confirmed Sunday.
According to an MPD Facebook post, an officer was in the area of 6385 Winchester Road around 4:15 PM on Saturday when he heard several gunshots. Security forces went to the scene and found two bodies with several gunshot wounds, and they were taken to the hospital.
Mims, 47, was identified as the victim who was pronounced dead at the hospital. The second victim was in stable condition on Sunday, police said.
During a news conference Saturday evening, Deputy Chief Paul Wright said police were analyzing the video but a suspect had not been identified at the time. He added that it is also not clear whether there were multiple shooters.
“We feel that the person who was shot may have been targeted by the suspect,” Wright said.
He added that the two men who were shot were attending the funeral ceremony.
Police said Sunday that a witness at the scene said the suspects in a white SUV were responsible for the shooting. The car was a white Ford Explorer with black wheels and dark-tinted windows, and pictures of it were captured on surveillance video.
No arrests have been made, and the investigation continues. Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 528-CASH (2274) or visit Crimestopmem.org.
CMG artists react to Big Jock’s death
Several artists on Yo Gotti’s CMG label, which his brother was involved with, took to social media following news of Anthony Mims’ death.
On Instagram, popular CMG rapper GloRilla posted a photo of herself at the 2023 Grammy Awards with Yo Gotti and Big Jook, with the caption “Take it easy” with a crying emoji.
Another CMG rapper Big Boogie posted a photo of himself with his head bowed, tagging “Big Jook” with the phrase “Forever Love You.” Big Boogie also posted a series of Instagram Stories containing photos and videos of Big Jook with similar messages.
Louisville rapper Est Gee, a fellow CMG artist, posted a photo of himself with Big Jook, praising him: “You kept it real and I can never forget it,” Gee wrote.
Big Jook’s Instagram account still contains his most recent posts from Friday. A meme accompanied by what in hindsight is an ominous voiceover: “They don’t want to confront you, they want to trick you. STAY ALERT 2 STAY ALIVE AND WATCH YOUR BACK AT ALL TIMES.”
