Tyne Daly hospitalized, released from ‘Doubt’ on Broadway; Amy Ryan steps in as a substitute


Tyne Daly was unexpectedly hospitalized Friday and has withdrawn from her starring role in the Broadway revival of Doubt. She will be replaced by Amy Ryan.

The news was announced this afternoon by the Vertigo Theater Company. No reason was given for Daly’s hospitalization, but the company said she is expected to make a full recovery.

“Miss. Daly was unexpectedly admitted to the hospital on Friday and unfortunately needs to withdraw from the production while she receives medical care; she is fortunately expected to make a full recovery.

Director Scott Ellis said: “With respect and admiration for Tyne, we wish her the best and a speedy recovery.” “We are grateful that Amy Ryan said yes – in one quick minute – to join our company and take on the role of ‘Sister Aloysius.’ We are very appreciative of Isabel Keating, who notably stepped in with a day of rehearsal and allowed us to advance the production during the first week of performances.”

Ryan will step into the role of Sister Aloysius in the revival of John Patrick Shanley’s play. Liev Schreiber stars as “Father Flynn,” Quincy Tyler Bernstein stars as “Mrs. Mueller,” and Zoe Kazan stars as “Sister James.”

Ryan’s first performance will be on Tuesday, February 13th. For performances through Sunday, February 11, the alternate role will be played by Keating (The Boy from Oz).

Opening night is now Thursday, March 7, a week after the scheduled opening on February 29 (previews began on February 3). The limited engagement runs through Sunday, April 14 at the Todd Hymes Theater.

Daly won a Tony Award for her title role in the 1989 Broadway revival of the play Gypsiesand was nominated for a Tony Award for performances in Rabbit hole (2006) and Mothers and sons (2014). She played Maria Callas, both on Broadway and in London’s West End, in a play by Terrence McNally. Master class (2011-12).
