1. Gather copies of your insurance documents. Make sure you have copies of your insurance policies (home, flood, auto) in a safe, dry, and accessible place or electronically saved where you can easily retrieve them.

2. Save your insurance company’s contact information. Save your insurance company’s toll-free claims number in your cell phone contacts. APCIA has a list of toll-free numbers for insurance companies here.

3. Take a home inventory. Use your smartphone to take photos or videos of your belongings, such as furniture, appliances, clothing, garden equipment, artwork, jewelry, and anything else of great value. Save your inventory somewhere where you can easily retrieve it, like the cloud, or email yourself a copy. You can also check if your insurance company has an app to help their policyholders build a home inventory.

“If your home or business sustained damage in the storm, contact your insurance company as soon as possible to begin the claims process,” said Jeffrey Brewer, vice president of public affairs at APCIA. “Insurers are prepared to quickly deploy all available resources to process claims and help policyholders begin the recovery process once the storm passes.”

Most hurricanes, storms, hail and similar severe weather-related losses are covered by either comprehensive auto coverage, homeowners, renters or commercial insurance policies, APCIA said.
