MSI Unveils RTX 4070 SUPER GAMING X SLIM MLG Series with Iconic Red Design, 245W TDP Out of the Box

Back to the roots: MSI has brought back its triple-fan GAMING card in red

Announcing the GAMING X SLIM MLG series.

MSI’s upcoming RTX 4070 SUPER lineup will get a small update, in the form of a new color design. MSI is following up with the release of its first MLG card featuring a Dragon-maiden theme with a black and red color scheme. The previously released RTX 4060 had a dual-fan design, while the new GAMING X SLIM series will get three fans.

At the moment, MLG’s build has only been announced for the RTX 4070 SUPER, with no official plans for the 4070 Ti/4080 SUPER. This means that the highest spec available with the Red/Black design features an AD104 GPU with 7168 CUDA cores and 12GB of GDDR6X memory. MSI has two models, either with or without factory overclocking. The company advertises a maximum GPU clock of 2655MHz, which can be implemented through MSI Center software, or a 2640MHz clock out of the box, if users choose not to use that software. Alternatively, there is a non-OC model with a frequency of 2490/2475 MHz, respectively.

The card is designed to fit into two slots, and measures 12.5 x 12.5 x 4.6 cm, so it’s not the smallest card ever. But for those who really like this design but may have problems installing the card, there is still the RTX 4060 option.

Unlike the GAMING X SLIM and X SLIM WHITE, the MLG version offers an additional magnetically attached cover to the back panel. When users use this cover, it effectively hides all the screws, visible GPU partition, and partially covers the air exhaust. While this may lead to a slight increase in temperatures, the impact on heat is expected to be marginal.

The interesting fact about the MSI GAMING X SLIM series (where X stands for OC cards) is that they all come with 245W TDP out of the box. According to NVIDIA specifications, the RTX 4070 SUPER SKU offers a 220W TDP by default, while the Founders Edition has a maximum TGP of 240W. What this means is that MSI cards are 5W higher than the NVIDIA FE design, and that’s before manual overclocking. Unfortunately, MSI does not provide what the maximum TGP is for this design.

The MSI GAMING X SLIM designs will be available in white, black and red. The RTX 4060 model also came in a green version. What should be noted is that the GAMING Non-MSRP. Initial information from US retailers doesn’t mention any MLG model yet, so presumably this card will be available at a later date.
