Mobi Acquires Martin Scorsese-Narrated Documentary ‘Made in England: The Films of Powell and Pressburger’


Mubi has acquired the rights across multiple territories Made in England: The Films of Powell and Pressburgerthe documentary narrated by Martin Scorsese is set to premiere this week at the Berlin Film Festival.

Under the deal, the global film distributor, production company and streaming service will retain all rights in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Italy, France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, Latin America, Turkey and India. Altitude opens in UK and Irish cinemas on 10 May.

The agreement was made between Altitude and Mubi. The streamer said he will announce specific details about the doc’s release in the coming months.

Directed by two-time BAFTA winner and Emmy Award winner David Hinton, the film is narrated by Scorsese and is described as the director’s “personal and poignant look at two of British cinema’s greatest filmmakers”.

Producing, writing and directing, Powell and Pressburger made some of the most revered films of the British Golden Age, including… Red Shoes, Black Narcissus, A Matter of Life and Death and the Life and Death of Colonel Blimp. As Scorsese put it, their films were “grand, poetic, wise, adventurous, stubborn, enchanted by beauty, deeply romantic, and absolutely uncompromising.”

Made in England: The Films of Powell and Pressburger For the first time in the sidebar of Wednesday’s Berlinale specials. Moonflower Killers Director Scorsese will be present in the German capital, where he will also receive the festival’s honorary Golden Bear.

Producers on the doc are Nick Farley and Matthew Wells. Executive producers are Olivia Harrison, Will Clarke, Thomas Hoag, Scorsese, Claudia Youssef, Eva Yates, Mark Thomas, Charles Cohen, and Thelma Schoonmaker, Scorsese’s longtime editor and ex-wife of Michael Powell.

Last week, we shared the first official look at the document here. The clip shows Scorsese explaining his early and unique introduction to Powell and Pressburger’s work. The footage also features some rare archival material from Powell, Pressburger, and Scorsese’s personal collections that appear throughout the rest of the doc.

The Berlin Film Festival continues until February 25.
