King Charles speaks for the first time since his cancer diagnosis

King Charles has spoken publicly for the first time since revealing his cancer diagnosis.

The British monarch issued a statement on Saturday in which he expressed his “many thanks” for all the messages of support he has received in the past week, while he undergoes treatment for his unspecified condition.

He said in his statement: “As everyone who has been affected by cancer knows, such kind thoughts are the greatest consolation and encouragement.”

He added: “It is equally encouraging to hear how sharing my diagnosis has helped enhance public understanding and highlight the work of all those organizations who support cancer patients and their families across the UK and the wider world.

“My lifelong admiration for their tireless care and dedication is a result of my personal experience.”

Last week, the king traveled from London to his country in Norfolk, eastern England, where he was reportedly resting between treatments. He has withdrawn from all public engagements, but is said to be keen to carry on other royal business, such as reading and signing government papers.

Last Monday, it was revealed that Charles had been diagnosed with cancer while being treated for benign prostatic hyperplasia, although the King’s Office confirmed that his condition was not prostate cancer.

His daughter-in-law, Kate Middleton, continues to recover at home after having abdominal surgery last month. She is not scheduled to appear in public again until after Easter at the end of March.

Prince Harry traveled to London for a short visit to see his father last week, before returning to Los Angeles 24 hours later. He and his wife, Meghan Markle, are expected to be guests at the Superbowl on Sunday night in Las Vegas.
