New Delhi:

A deputy director at a general insurance company in Kancheepuram, Tamil Nadu, was duped of Rs 39 lakh on the pretext of an education loan scam.

The victim, Pratishtha Garg, a resident of Kancheepuram, Tamil Nadu, and originally from Rohini, Delhi, fell prey to an elaborate scam orchestrated by a group claiming to be loan brokers and representatives of a fake lending company.

In her FIR at Rohini cyber police station, Garg stated that she was searching for an education loan online and entered her details on Sulekha.com.

Soon after, she received a call from a person named Nakul, who posed as a loan broker and assured her of a loan from a company called RS Enterprises.

Nakul, along with others posing as the accountant and owner of the company, gained Garg’s trust through fabricated documents and communications.

They then proceeded to grab Garg by demanding various fees under various pretexts, including application fees, verification fees, approval fees, advance monthly installments, and even NPCI approval costs, according to Rohini cyber police.

The victim initially paid the requested amounts, hoping to obtain the actual loan amount. However, when she realized she had been scammed and asked for her money back, the perpetrators refused, claiming the fees were non-refundable.

Pratishtha Garg continued to pay fraudsters to get her loan. In all, she made more than 70 transactions, worth a staggering Rs 39 lakh, before finally realizing the entire scheme was a scam.

Following Garg’s complaint, Delhi Police registered an FIR under Section 420 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) at Rohini Cyber Police Station and initiated an investigation to trace the culprits and recover the stolen money.

Further investigations are underway. More information is awaited.
