Poor Things, directed by Yorgos Lanthimos’ Oscar-winning film, which hit theaters in December, is now available for purchase/rent on Prime Video and Apple TV+, and will be released on Blu-ray/DVD on March 12.
The film is a story of “love, discovery and scientific daring” set in the Victorian era, and is based on Alasdair Grey’s novel of the same name. The film stars Emma Stone as Bella, a Frankenstein-like woman who comes back to life after her brain is replaced with that of her unborn child. Stone stars opposite Willem Dafoe, who plays the brilliant and unconventional scientist who resurrects Bill from the dead.
The cast of “Poor Things” also includes Mark Ruffalo as Duncan Wedderburn, Jerrod Carmichael as Harry Astley, Ramy Youssef as Max McCandless, Christopher Abbott as Sir Aubrey de la Pole Blessington, Margaret Qualley, Katherine Hunter, and Susie Bemba. And Wayne Brett.
The digital and physical releases feature hours of bonus content, including a featurette with Stone, Lantimos and the rest of the cast and crew as they take viewers behind the scenes during the making of the fictional film. The short film explores costumes, makeup and prosthetics, as well as intimate tours of the film’s many intricately designed sets. Upcoming releases also include a list of deleted scenes titled “Brotel’s Doctor,” “Alfie’s Chapter,” and “Bella’s Notebook.”
“Poor Things” was the second most nominated film for the 2024 Oscars, earning 11 nominations including Best Picture and Best Actress in a Leading Role for Stone.
“That night, I was freaking out, as you see, happens a lot — that something like this might happen, and Yorgos (Lanthimos) said to me, ‘Please get yourself out of this,’” Stone said in her acceptance speech. . “And he was right, because it’s not about me. It’s about a team coming together to make something greater than the sum of its parts.”
In his review of the film, he said: diverse Film critic Jay Lodge wrote that “Lanthimos delivers a macabre sensual banquet that is miles away from his earlier Greek weird wave asceticism, but utterly subversive.”
