Greta Gerwig, Taraji P. Henson and Andra Day are among TIME’s Women of the Year 2024


The arts are well represented in Time magazine’s annual Women of the Year list, with the class of 24 including actress, writer and director Greta Gerwig, actor Taraji P. Henson, and singer, songwriter and actress Andra Day.

The list of 12 women was announced this morning. Also included on the list are tennis player Coco Gauff; Chanel Global CEO Leena Nair; Co-founder and leader of the Israeli Women Make Peace movement Yael Admi; Founder and Director of Women of the Sun, Reem Hajajra; President and CEO of the non-profit Nadia Initiative, Nadia Murad; Medical scientist and research professor in the field of hyperemesis gravidarum Marlena Viso; Chisholm Heritage Project Founder and Executive Director Jackie Patterson; poet Ada Lemon; and economic historian and labor economist Claudia Goldin.

TIME’s list is designed to honor “extraordinary leaders working for a more equal world.”

Regarding Day, Time magazine correspondent Moises Mendez said the singer “came to prominence in 2015 with her song Rise Up, a poignant song that received a Grammy nomination and later became an anthem for the Black Lives Matter protests.” In 2021, in her first leading role in a feature film, she plays one of the most legendary singers of all time in director Lee Daniels’ film.
