First responders are preparing to help the most vulnerable people as thousands will remain without power on Saturday

Today’s major news events, business reports, sports updates, Rochester area weather information and tomorrow’s forecasts are provided by the News10NBC team.

National Grid customers in Monroe, Livingston and Ontario counties will be affected by a power outage from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Saturday. The company says it is necessary to make repairs to its poles and transmission lines.

It’s a situation first responders like Rush Fire Chief John Vu said they’ve been preparing for for weeks, to protect the most vulnerable.

“You can always call 911 and we’ll be here to help. But National Grid has reached out to a lot of people that they at least know that are dependent on certain things,” Fu said.

Fu said his department will be staffed and ready to respond to emergencies on Saturday.

“If they have a problem, we will be here to help – but as a last resort. “That’s what we hope for,” Fu said.

Before the power outages, National Grid did its part to make sure those who depend on powered medical devices had the resources they needed to stay safe, Fu said.

“These arrangements should have been made to find alternative ways to provide these services to them,” Fu said.

Affected areas include:

Avon, Caledonia, Lima, and Livonia in Livingston County;

Bloomfield and West Bloomfield in Ontario; And

Henrietta, Honeoye Falls, Mendon, and Rush in Monroe County.

Derek West, owner of Honeoye Falls Marketplace, said his employees spent the day moving perishable food items into refrigerated storage trailers and using signs to alert customers.

“I’m sure there will be people who wake up tomorrow and be surprised, but I think the community here, it’s a very close-knit community, so I think most people know that and try to plan for it,” West said.

West hopes neighbors will remember to check on each other and look out for the most vulnerable.

“I think someone who is elderly or may have some special requirements is checking in on their neighbors to make sure they’re going to be OK,” West said.

West says he plans to open his store as soon as power is restored Saturday, but it may take a few hours to get refrigerated items back on the shelves.
