Spanish independent film studio Filmax has sold “The Teacher who Promised the Sea” to Italy’s Officine Ubu following sales to Israel’s Nachshon Films, Angel Films Scandinavia, India’s BookMyShow, and the flight rights to Encore Inflight.

“The Teacher…” is inspired by the true story of Antoni Benigues, a teacher from Catalonia who was hired in 1935 to teach in a small village school in the province of Burgos. Through new and innovative teaching methods, he began to change not only the lives of his students but also life in the village. However, not everyone in the village was happy with these changes.

The film had a successful showing in Spanish cinemas in the fall and winter of 2023-2024.

Ivan Diaz, president of Filmax International, expects other major areas of EFM where it is screened to close.

“We are delighted that a prestigious company like Officube Ubu will give a theatrical release in an important market like Italy for this film, which has brought us so much success at the Spanish box office,” he said.

“The Teacher…” is directed by Patricia Font, winner of the Goya Award for Best Short Film for “Coffee To Go,” and produced by Minoria Absoluta, Lastor Media, Filmax and Mestres Films AIE.

Filmax, which celebrated its 70th anniversary last year, is one of the largest independent studios in Spain, involved in film and television production, film distribution, international film and television sales as well as exhibitions.

It recently acquired global distribution rights to the romantic comedy “My Friend Eva”, the latest film from Spanish director Cesc Gay, whose last film “Truman” was a huge success abroad, generating significant box office receipts in theaters in several countries.
