More than 150 flight cancellations and about 250 delays upset travelers at Denver International Airport on Sunday as freezing temperatures continued into the weekend.
As of 11 a.m. GMT, 165 cancellations had been tracked at the airport, along with 256 delays, according to airline tracking site FlightAware.
Southwest Airlines accounted for 73 cancellations and 103 delays, followed by United Airlines with 68 cancellations and 84 delays. Regional airline SkyWest recorded 15 cancellations and 27 delays. Regional carrier Mesa Airlines canceled three flights and postponed two; Frontier Airlines reported two cancellations and 11 delays.
Alaska Airlines has canceled two flights with no delays so far. Delta Air Lines, American Airlines, Air Canada and Aeromexico all avoided cancellations, but recorded some delays.
A wind chill warning hit much of Colorado, including the Denver area and the airport, Sunday morning.
“Operations at DEN are running smoothly at this time,” Denver International Airport spokesman Ashley Forrest said. “While the airport is experiencing cold temperatures, we ask passengers to check with their airline before heading to the airport, arrive at least two hours before they are scheduled to board, and expect some delays if de-icing procedures are in place.”
She pointed to individual airlines and the Federal Aviation Administration as the entities that make decisions about delays and cancellations.
This trend is consistent with Saturday’s pattern of delays and cancellations, which represented a total of more than 700 flights affected as of 5:15 p.m.
