Chris Evans and Jennifer Lopez are nominated for Worst Actors; “Shazam 2” and “Ant-Man 3” get 4 nods

Awards season is here, which means it’s also time for the annual Golden Raspberry Awards. The Razzies, which aim to (discredit) the year’s less successful films, have announced nominations for their 44th edition.

The most nominated film is “Expend4bles,” the fourth entry in the action-packed, but very disappointing, “The Expendables” series. It received seven nominations.

In second place with five nominations were “The Exorcist: Believer,” a revival of the classic horror series, and “Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey,” a blood-soaked film about everyone’s favorite honey-loving bear. Two big-budget superhero films, Shazam! Fury of the Gods” and Marvel’s Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania received four nominations.

Last year, Andrew Dominik’s film “Blonde” topped the competition with eight nominations, winning the Worst Picture award. The group also felt compelled to issue an apology last year after 11-year-old Ryan actor Keira Armstrong was nominated in the worst actress category for her performance in the new horror film “Firestarter.” The gesture was met with harsh criticism, with original Firestarter star Drew Barrymore saying it “makes my blood boil.”

“We believe Ms. Armstrong deserves a public apology, and we would like to say that we are sorry for any harm she has suffered as a result of our choices,” John Wilson, founder of the Razzies, wrote in a statement. “We never intended to bury anyone’s career. That’s why our Redeemer Award was created. We all make mistakes, including ourselves. Since our motto is ‘Own your bad’, we realize that we too must live up to that motto.”

The Razzies also found themselves forced to pass another act of penance last year, naming a special award for Bruce Willis. With so many direct-to-video action actors in recent years, the actor has become such a Razzie that the awards group created a “Worst Bruce Willis Performance in a Movie of 2021” category. After Willis and his family publicly revealed the actor’s struggle with aphasia, a language disorder that causes brain damage, the Razzies canceled the category.

The Razzie organization was founded in 1981, and Razzie nominations are now determined by a select committee before ballots are issued to members. Anyone can become a voting member of the Razzies by paying an annual fee of $40 or a lifetime membership of $500. Even with the influx of money, the organization’s old official website still looks up to Internet users from more than a decade ago.
