Chelsea Handler criticized Jo Koy’s monologue at the Critics’ Choice Awards’ Golden Globes

Comedian Chelsea Handler hosted the 2024 Critics’ Choice Awards on Sunday, where she slammed a widely criticized Golden Globes monologue by Jo Koy — who happens to be her ex-boyfriend.

In her opening monologue at CCA, Handler joked about actors Harrison Ford and Robert De Niro being “total smoke shows,” and added that she would throw Martin Scorsese in “like a little Italian meatball.”

She continued by saying: “Thank you for laughing at this. It was written in my book.” This line received great applause from the audience, which included many celebrities who attended the Golden Globe Awards last week.

The gag was an obvious reference to Coy, who threw his book under the bus when one particular joke — about Barbie being a movie about a “plastic doll with big boobs” — didn’t go down well with the audience at the Globe Awards.

“I got the gig 10 days ago,” Coy said on the Golden Globes stage. “You want a perfect monologue? Oh, shut up. Slow down. I wrote some of these words and she’s the one laughing at them.”

Handler and Coy dated from August 2021 to July 2022, adding an extra layer to their digs.

Several other jokes, including one about the number of times Taylor Swift appears on camera during boyfriend Travis Kelce’s NFL games, sparked backlash for the comedian.
