Causey stresses the importance of insurance against future storms

HARKERS ISLAND, N.C. (WNCT) – The topic N.C. Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey spoke about Wednesday was resiliency programs to strengthen homes against storm damage.

This comes after two hurricanes hit Harkers Island last week. Causey, who was in the area Wednesday, said it’s important for homeowners to understand what insurance is needed to protect their homes from future storms.

“If you have replacement value coverage, which is a few extra dollars each month, but it pays the total replacement cost for new items of furniture or any household goods that are replaced,” Causey said.

Flood insurance, which is not covered by homeowners insurance, is especially important in the case of damage caused by hurricanes. Causey added that 88,000 homeowners statewide got nothing after their homes were destroyed during Hurricane Florence due to a lack of flood insurance.
