Atlanta Restaurant Receives Threats About Surcharge to Help with Employee Health Insurance – WSB-TV Channel 2

ATLANTA — A local Atlanta restaurant wants to offer health insurance to its employees. Owners do this by adding an additional 4% fee to customers’ bills.

Jenchan’s is a staple in the “Cabbage City” located in southeast Atlanta.

The atmosphere is welcoming.

The food is good but unique.

“We really want to get everyone to the table and have dinner together,” Emily Chan said.

“We’re a pizza and Chinese restaurant. I know we’ve got a lot going for it,” Chan said.

They also get a lot of clients.

“Vietnamese pork pizza is very popular. Our pizza is made with sourdough, which is probably about seven years old now,” Chan said.

Emily Chan said this is one of the best sellers on their list. But recently, there is another element that has gained everyone’s attention.

“We have a line item on our menu to cover health insurance. It’s something we’ve been inspired to do by other restaurants here in Atlanta doing the same thing. It’s the only way we can do the math to cover health insurance for our employees.”

The 4%’s message is on their list. As a customer, you know this before you place your order. The restaurant says it’s about giving its customers a choice.

“Of course, people will disagree with that, and I think that’s the beautiful thing about where we live. I want people to disagree because that means we can have a conversation about it. That’s great but let’s leave physical violent threats out of the picture,” Chan said. “.

Chan said these threats were posted on their Facebook page.

“I’ve never seen a family need to hit the ground running more and make health care this affordable,” one post reads.

But other people support the restaurant. “You are doing your job right by your employees and customers,” another Facebook post said. I hope there are more like you.

“We’re obviously doing this to draw attention to something. Health insurance is incredibly expensive. Our son isn’t even on our health insurance plan, because it’s really expensive,” Chan said.

The restaurant said that as of now, the 4% will help them provide insurance to full-time employees only, who work 35 hours or more.

They hope to include all employees soon.
