Amazon denies a report that says Freevee has been shut down

Amazon says Freevee isn’t going away.

With Amazon Prime Video launching ads by default last month, rumors and speculation have mounted that the tech giant will no longer have a strategic need for Freevee — the free, ad-supported streaming service separate from Prime Video. A report by Adweek on February 21, citing anonymous sources, said Amazon would “wind down” Freevee, likely in the second quarter and possibly before NewFronts in late April.

In response to a request for comment, Amazon said the Adweek report was inaccurate.

“There are no changes to Freevee,” a rep said in an email to diverse. “Amazon Freevee remains an important streaming offering, providing Prime and non-Prime customers with thousands of original movies, shows, and specials, all for free.”
