Alpha reviews for Kill The Justice League, following NDA

The saga of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League continues to be a wild saga. As I detailed yesterday, the marketing decisions made in the game were somewhat puzzling, regardless of the content of the game itself. Now, Warner Bros. And Rocksteady did something very rare, they did just that Raising the National Democratic Rally In closed alpha testing a month ago so players can now talk about their time with the game.

This comes after the game’s preview embargo was lifted as journalists and creatives were flown to Los Angeles to test the game, but technical issues reduced the play time to just a few hours, and there was little time to answer many lingering questions. It turned the game around as a result, and disjointed playtime combined with other issues resulted in several major titles being mixed to poor as a result.

For weeks now, I’ve been hearing more positive impressions from alpha test participants behind the scenes, and letting them share their thoughts makes sense given that they’ve had three days with the game, while the recent preview audience only had a very few hours.

It’s not known exactly how many people participated in the closed alpha, but opinions are now pouring in on social media as a result of the NDA being raised, both positive and negative. However, players also cannot share gameplay footage and screenshots.

As for fans’ opinions? Here’s a small group of my readers, both positive and negative, now that they can open up:

  • @JakeNoseIt – “They realized they weren’t going to go into a superhero simulator (Batman/Spidey)! Instead, create a fun TPS game with a DC Comics flavour. Traversal really worked for me and I felt rewarded because I discovered their systems. I found myself playing a lot just because “It was fun on the sticks.”
  • @BrosophSZN – “Better than expected, very well polished, I think I only ran into one bug in several hours. The co-op worked well and I didn’t experience any issues. The gear is really the only concern I had, as everything seemed Kinda similar, but I only had access to low level stuff.
  • @isolatedscot – “Played the story, remember nothing, played the gameplay, remember it was bad, movement was slow and shooting wasn’t fun either.”
  • @EdFiftyNine – “The characters are great and the gameplay is fun in the short time I’ve played it but there are still questions about how long it can hold people’s attention and whether the game will be able to avoid the same mistakes other live service games have had.”
  • @oood – “I think the gameplay works really well! Using weapons to open up enemies in melee to retrieve shields was fun. I liked the story and character moments a lot more than I expected. The action as Harley was also a blast with a grappling hook somewhere in between Batman and Spider-Man!
  • @OfficialRyat – “I actually really liked the closed alpha, it was a lot of fun and the combat was smooth and fun. Lots of different options for your skill tree. Instant switching between characters made the game feel really fluid and immersive. 9/10”
  • @Gh0stivan1 – “Very fun, it reminded me of Sunset Overdrive, and it plays better than Gotham Knights. The story looks good in the parts we can play, but I can see that some side activities get repetitive but that’s the same with most similar games.
  • @KYShaunT1 – “Traversing is very fun and very different for each character, and I laughed out loud several times at some parts/story lines.”

I also have a thread here with dozens of impressions from readers in addition to the ones I picked up:

Like I said, I’m probably seeing a 10:1 ratio of positive to negative reactions, though with the caveat that many people who were invested enough to sign up for Suicide Squad alpha may be more inclined to like it. But it’s still more positive than recent previews.

There’s no telling how this will translate to launch, or even if it’s very good, if it will lead to a long service life. But this is definitely the most positive press the game has seen in probably a year, and we’ll see what the bigger reaction is now.
