A Marshalltown man has been sentenced for fraud in disaster insurance claims

A Marshalltown man was sentenced to 21 months in prison after pleading guilty to insurance fraud related to the 2018 EF-3 tornado that struck Marshalltown, as well as the 2020 tornado.

Justice Department officials say Timothy Sletten, 32, participated in two separate schemes to defraud insurance company State Farm.

In 2018, after the hurricane, Sletten submitted false business invoices on his rental residential properties to obtain claims benefits.

Then again in 2020, after the decision, he submitted false labor invoices from contractors claiming he had paid contractors to repair disaster damage to his rental homes when he had not done so.

State Farm paid Sletten just over $180,000 in damages for losses as a result of the false claims.

Following the 2020 decision, State Farm opened an internal investigation that led to the company refusing to pay disaster-related claims filed by Sletten.

Additionally, Sletten was fined $50,000 and ordered to pay full restitution.

Following his prison term, Sletten will be required to serve three years of federal supervised release. There is no parole in the federal system.
