Jennifer Hudson says she’s ‘heartbroken’ over ‘Idol’ vocal coach Debra Byrd’s death: ‘We’ll miss her so much’


Two days after the news was published American Idol Vocal coach Debra Byrd has died, and one of her most successful students has paid tribute.

Jennifer Hudson took to social media and wrote that she was “saddened” to hear about Byrd’s death.

“She encouraged and supported us from the beginning! “I am so grateful for everything she taught us,” the Season 3 standout wrote. “She will be greatly missed, but her legacy lives on through the music of the countless artists she influenced during her life.”

This list of artists extends far beyond the reality competition stages. In addition to aspirants, Byrd’s students have included Grammy Award winners, recording artists, actors, musicians and Broadway stars. She has worked closely with Kelly Clarkson, Fantasia, Jennifer Hudson, Bob Dylan, Barry Manilow and many others.

Byrd performed with Manilow for many years, touring the world as part of Ladyflash, Manilow’s signature backup group.

“This is one of the saddest days of my life,” Manilow wrote on X/Twitter. “I can’t wrap my head around the fact that Debra Byrd is no longer with me. She was one of the most wonderful friends I’ve ever had. I will miss you forever, my love.
