Meanwhile, production on the sixth season of the romantic drama, which was delayed due to strikes and weather, begins today in Vancouver. (As Deadline revealed, it will premiere in 2025.)
Before Mel (Alexandra Breckenridge) and Jack’s (Martin Henderson) romance took hold on Virgin River, Mel’s late mother Sarah also fell in love with a man from the picturesque Northern California town of Everett, which was recently revealed. Virgin River The Christmas Special is Mel’s biological father.
The potential prequel, which is currently in development, will explore Sarah and Everett’s origin story. The upcoming sixth season will offer a glimpse into the duo’s past, featuring young Everett and Sarah in flashbacks.
Casting is now underway to play the characters as guest stars in Season 6 of Virgin River. If successful, they will headline a Sarah & Everett spinoff, which is being written in development by Virgin River Showrunner Patrick Sean Smith.
Netflix took a similar route with another hit romantic drama, Bridgertonsuccessfully expanded the universe with the Prequel Queen Charlotte Which became one of the most watched series on the streaming device.
During a Q&A with Deadline related to the Christmas special that concluded Season 5, Smith, who joined the series after Season 4, hinted that we’ll learn more about Sarah and Everett’s romance next season.
“What we’re exploring more in Season 6 is who Everett Reed is, what his backstory is, what his relationship was with Virgin River when he met her mother and then also who she is today,” he said, adding that Season 6 will have more details. Explore “Everett’s relationship with the city as well as Everett and Mill.”
John Allen Nelson was introduced in the Christmas special, playing Everett in the present; Sarah is not seen in the show, at least not in a meaningful way.

At the end of Season 5, Part 1, Mel’s sister, Joy, discovered love letters sent to their mother by a man who revealed that he was Mel’s biological father. In the Christmas special, Mel and Jack launched a search for the mystery man which eventually led them to Everett Reed. At first, he wanted nothing to do with Mel but by the end of the special, in true holiday spirit, he came around and asked to be a part of her life.
