Super Bowl Rally Shooting Update: 22 Gunshot Victims, 1 Death, Kansas City Fire Chief Says – Update

Updated at 3:31 p.m.: The toll from today’s mass shooting at the Kansas City Chiefs’ Super Bowl celebration continues to rise. There are now “a total of 22 gunshot victims, one of them fatal,” Fire Chief Ross Grandison said during a late afternoon news conference. We had eight patients who we considered to be life-threatening, seven with life-threatening injuries, and six with minor injuries.

Those with life-threatening injuries “were transported to hospitals within 10 minutes, so we felt the response was certainly adequate and appropriate,” he said.

Kansas City Police Chief Stacey Graves said officers “arrested three people and are under investigation.” She added that police are “working to determine” whether one of them appeared in a video on social media that showed bystanders talking to a man who was fleeing the scene.

Asked if there was more than one shooting scene, Graves said: “This is still an active matter. That’s a big area to cover, you know the size of Union Station. I will tell you we found the crime scene on the west side of Union Station. As far as In front of
(The station), and the matter is still under investigation. We have crime scene investigators as well as detectives. We had a lot of our assault squad detectives and our homicide detectives who were in uniform today doing the job, so not only did you have a uniformed presence immediately responding to the scene and providing assistance and running to the scene, but you also had investigators immediately to The scene of the accident and those who are still there and actively working.”

Previous update, 2:24 p.m “We still have parties that go into hospitals,” Kansas City Police Chief Stacy Graves said this afternoon in the wake of a deadly mass shooting following Super Bowl celebrations in the city’s Union Station.

The president added: “I have no conditions for our victims yet.” “I don’t think any of them were children.”

So far, at least one person has been killed and 10 to 15 others have been injured as a result of gunfire and non-firearm injuries.

The shooting came on the heels of a downtown Kansas City Chiefs Valentine’s Day parade and rally. A local hospital is currently treating four gunshot victims and eight others with non-weapon injuries.

The police chief explained, “This investigation has just begun, and we are working safely to disinfect all surrounding areas and businesses,” noting that up to 20 bullets were fired. This is the 57th mass shooting incident in America in 2024 so far.

Chief Graves confirmed that two armed “suspects” had been taken into custody. It remains unclear whether or not this duo was involved in Wednesday’s shooting. “As soon as the rally ended, shots were fired on the west side of Union Station,” the Kansas City Police Chief said at the conference less than two hours after the shooting. “Officers were on scene in the area. I know one of the suspects was immediately pursued on foot. “There are two suspects in custody.”

About 800 local law enforcement officers were in the area, due to the Chiefs’ second straight NFL championship parade.

“I’m angry about what happened today,” Chief Graves added in what became an at times heated exchange with reporters. “The people who attended this celebration should expect a safe environment. We had over 800 officers on the scene. And because of the bad actors — which are not… “We only have a few of them – this tragedy happened.”

Police Chief and Mayor Quinton Lucas chanted, “This is not Kansas City.” “We pray for everyone’s safety,” the city’s mayor said.

Mayor Lucas added that he heard from the White House offering “all federal assistance in the investigation.” While the press conference was ongoing, the Biden administration issued a statement of its own. “The President has been briefed on the Kansas City shooting and will continue to receive updates. White House officials have been in contact with state and local leaders, and federal law enforcement is on scene to support local law enforcement,” the statement read. “

Officials said four people were being treated for gunshot wounds at the University Health Center and eight others for non-weapon injuries. Thousands of people stampeded after hearing several gunshots around 2 p.m. local time.

Another update and press conference is scheduled for 3pm PT.
