Netflix selects Swiss comedy ‘Upstairs Neighbors’ for German-speaking Europe


Exclusive: Netflix has acquired the rights to show the Swiss comedy in Germany, Austria and Switzerland Neighbors from upstairs (Nachbarn von Oppen dies) after the theatrical screening of the film.

The Ascot Elite Entertainment cartoon attracted 72,000 admissions in German-speaking Switzerland and was one of the best-performing Swiss comedies of 2023.

The film follows married couple Thomas and Anna who are desperate for some romance after 20 years of marriage. When they invite their excited neighbors over for dinner, they get a surprisingly hot proposal that takes their night and their relationship down a path they didn’t expect.

The film’s lead actresses Orsina Lardi and Sarah Spell are currently nominated for the Swiss Film Award, which will be revealed in March, the same month the film becomes available on Netflix. Max Simonicek and Roland Wesnecker also star.

The pic was directed by Sabine Bos. Alexandre Sebet adapted the screenplay, which is based on the Spanish-language film of the same name from 2020.

The producers of Ascot Elite Entertainment are Karen J. Dietrich (CEO), Ralph S. Dietrich (CEO), Stefan Geiger (CEO) and Roger Kaufman (Producer). Production companies are Elite Filmproduktion in co-production with SRF Schweizer Radio und Fernsehen and Blue+. It was financed by the Federal Office for Culture, the Zurich Film Foundation, and Suissimage, and supported by Veriset, Fors, and Coast Boutique.
