The storm is here. Does your insurance cover it? – NBC 7 San Diego

If you live in San Diego, you probably received a flash flood warning on your phone Monday morning. If you’re one of the unlucky people whose home was damaged, here’s what you need to know about filing a claim:

A San Diego home was flooded after rain on Monday.

Does my insurance cover the damage?

First, find out if you have flood insurance, which is separate from your regular homeowner’s insurance policy.

Flood insurance will cover damage caused by water that makes its way into your home from the ground. Other damage caused by the storm itself may be covered under your regular homeowner’s insurance — such as a leaky roof, wind damage, or a tree falling on your home.

What about your car? If it was damaged by falling trees or other floodwaters, is this included? You need to check if you have comprehensive coverage, which is separate from collision coverage.

If you need to file a claim with your flood, homeowner, or auto insurance company, here’s what you need to do:

  • Take photos and videos of everything. Documenting damages and problems can help during the claims process
  • do not be late. Contact your insurance company as soon as possible, as they will likely be very busy processing claims. You want to start the process as quickly as possible.

Another note, Consumer Reports says, in most cases, you shouldn’t file a claim for any damage less than the cost of your deductible. The exception is water damage. This is because what seems like a small problem may indicate a larger, more expensive mess lurking within your walls or ceiling. Remember: Insurance claims take time, so keep all your paperwork organized.
