Auckland’s only In-N-Out Burger location has closed after the popular fast food restaurant decided it could no longer risk the safety of fed-up workers and their customers in a city plagued by recent crime.

The location will close its doors in March — even though the burger joint is profitable — due to ongoing crime in the community, In-N-Out’s chief operating officer, Denny Warnick, said in a surprise announcement over the weekend.

The fast food restaurant has been located in California City for 18 years.

“Despite taking repeated steps to create safer conditions, our customers and partners regularly become victims of vehicle break-ins, property damage, theft, and armed robbery,” Warnick wrote, according to CBS East Bay, which obtained the announcement.

“Additionally, this remains a busy and profitable location for the company, but our top priority must be the safety and well-being of our customers and partners – we cannot ask them to visit or work in an unsafe environment,” he said.

Data released by Oakland police at the start of the new year showed that burglaries increased 38% from 2022 to 2023, ABC 7 Bay Area reported.

The data showed that burglaries jumped by 23% year-on-year, and car thefts rose by 44%.

Workers at an In-N-Out restaurant in Oakland can either transfer to one of the company’s fast-food restaurants or accept a severance package.

“We are grateful to the local community, which has supported us for over 18 years, and recognize that this closure is negatively impacting our associates and their families,” Warnick wrote.
