Insure your car, says Coquitlam RCMP

Coquitlam RCMP are reminding drivers to make sure your vehicle is secured before you get behind the wheel.

This comes after the police said they witnessed a significant increase in the number of cars being driven without valid insurance. They say that since the beginning of January, they have issued 24 tickets, a sharp rise from January 2023, when they issued 11 tickets throughout the month.

Police say the number of those driving without insurance has steadily increased over the past year, citing the fact that as of May 2022, license plate decals are no longer required on vehicles as a possible contributing factor.

“When our officers stop vehicles without insurance, drivers often say they forgot or didn’t realize it because they didn’t have the reminder sticker on their car anymore.” said the sergeant. Mark McCutcheon, Coquitlam RCMP Traffic Services Commander.

“We strongly encourage drivers to ensure their vehicles are properly insured before travelling.”

Drivers caught without insurance could be hit with a $598 ticket and have their car towed.
