the previous SNL The star said he thought about his comeback over the holiday and “decided to come back to the podcast because I think, you know, it’s a long day when you’re not working and you’re on your toes, and I think it would also be a great break. And I think it’s really great to have a laugh.”

Carvey announced shortly after losing his son on November 15 to a drug overdose that he would be taking a break from work and social media. At the time, he wrote on Instagram that he needed to “figure out what life is like now that we’re a family of 3. We’ll heal and move on the best we can. Our beloved Dex wanted it that way.”

In yesterday’s podcast, Carvey said he appreciated the offers of help but added that grief is a “private journey.”

“It’s so beautiful, people say ‘if I could do anything’ and you really can’t,” he said. “It’s a special trip for me, my wife and our son. We’re all together. We do a lot of fun things. We go on walks and go to church. You just want to make sure you keep moving.”

Carvey’s podcast colleague and longtime friend Speed said he himself had received letters of condolence to pass along to Carvey, including one from the late’s mother. SNL Fellow Chris Farley. Speed said he had not yet delivered the letter to Carvey in part because “I didn’t want to overload you.”

Carvey said he believes humor and speaking with Spade on the podcast will help in his recovery.

“I’m kind of on the pain train,” Carvey said. “You don’t know how long you’re going to do it or when it’s going to stop or when it’s going to get better. In the meantime, all that kind of stuff is very healthy.”
