Former Navy doctor sentenced for insurance fraud


A federal court sentenced Michael Villarroel to one year and one day in prison after he pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit wire fraud in connection with an insurance fraud scheme, the Justice Department said Friday.

Villarroel, who previously served as a doctor in the U.S. Navy, participated in a scheme that obtained about $2 million in payments from fraudulent claims submitted to the group life insurance program for service members’ trauma, according to the Department of Justice.
