Elden Ring fans are excited about the announcement of Shadow of the Erdtree following the Backend Steam update

Elden Ring fans are eager for the Shadow of the Erdtree expansion announcement after developer FromSoftware made a change to the game’s backend on Steam.

X/Twitter user and Elden Ring YouTuber Ziostorm noticed the change on Elden Ring’s SteamDB page, where they shared an image of a new app that has been added to the DLC section of Elden Ring’s Steam page for the first time since launch.

“I’m not saying it’s 100% Shadow of the Erdtree, but there’s a very good chance it will happen,” they said, and fans are similarly hopeful elsewhere online. “An announcement should be imminent,” JoRads said on Reddit. “Sure. It’s a matter of days now, or even less,” Hector Savage replied.

This update also adds fuel to a previous rumor fire, as a leaked collaboration between Elden Ring publisher Bandai Namco and accessory creator Thrustmaster also suggested Shadow of the Erdtree would be released in February.

However, this isn’t the first time Elden Ring fans have gotten a little out of control waiting for an announcement after becoming incredibly confident about its reveal at The Game Awards 2023 – an announcement that clearly never got played out.

Shadow of the Erdtree was initially announced in March 2023 as a major expansion coming to Elden Ring. One piece of concept art was released alongside the announcement but didn’t offer much, only showing a figure atop a spectral steed looking towards the horizon of the dying Erdtree.

It will likely arrive as the only expansion for Elden Ring (outside of a smaller piece of player-versus-player DLC) and be similar to the likes of The Old Hunters expansion from Bloodborne or The Ringed City from Dark Souls 3.
