Car insurance rates should start improving after drivers decline policies

Experts are reassuring drivers that they are not uninsurable after a number of motorists were rejected by insurance companies because their cars were more likely to be stolen.

At the end of 2023, Jaguar Land Rover announced that it would roll out its own insurance product after drivers highlighted how difficult it was to get insurance.

Expensive cars such as Land Rovers and Range Rovers have been targeted by criminals seeking to steal their luxury vehicles through keyless entry in recent years.

This can happen when criminals have a relay device to relay the signal from the key fob back to the device, allowing people to get into the car without the owner knowing.

Jaguar Land Rover has now launched insurance offers to help “alleviate recent challenges customers have faced when seeking insurance”.

The company has already submitted more than 4,000 quotes since October, with an average “monthly premium of less than £200”, although market comparison data shows the average monthly premium is just £74.

A Jaguar Land Rover spokesperson said: “We are fully committed to doing everything we can to address this with a multi-faceted approach: from our significant investment in vehicle security, to now providing our own insurance.”

Despite insurance opportunities for Range Rover owners, some customers explained how they were unable to insure them or were quoted exorbitant and unsustainable prices.

This comes at a time when drivers are looking for new ways to ensure the safety of their cars throughout the night, including installing surveillance cameras, car locks and large gates.

Some have even gone to Jaguar Land Rover to install the latest security systems designed to prevent people from “hacking” keyless entry cars.

Gerry Buck, managing director of Adrian Flux, said drivers should be prepared for “bleak reading” when looking to insure their cars in relation to the price rise.

He added: “But the picture should start to improve, especially since the number of thefts may start to decrease.”

“We can still provide quotes for almost all situations as a result of being a broker and having access to a wide range of insurance companies.

“To make our prices more competitive, we require additional security on top of what the car owner already has to reduce the risk of it being stolen.”

Drivers in major cities such as London, Liverpool and Manchester are likely to see higher insurance rates due to the higher risk of their car being stolen.

Tips for motorists concerned about car theft include getting a Ghost Immobiliser, investing in a Faraday bag, and even adding a lock to their wheels.

Jerry Buck said drivers are unable to get specialist insurance quotes because online comparison sites are unlikely to offer these types of policies.

He added: “Speaking with someone on the phone gives you the opportunity to understand the bigger picture about current rates, discuss your options and find the most affordable coverage that suits your needs.

Many drivers have taken to social media to express their dissatisfaction with their car insurance rates over the past year, with some motorists claiming to have pocketed £30,000.

In one case, former Top Gear presenter Rory Reid told how he was offered up to £8,200 to insure his Tesla Model Y.
