Smackdown Recap and Reactions (January 12, 2023): Treading on water

The Cameron Grimes vs. Grayson Waller episode was supposed to start this week Friday Night SmackDown in Nebraska but was interrupted by The Bloodline, still unhappy with Roman Reigns getting booked in a fatal four-way match for the WWE Universal Championship at Royal Rumble last week. They were there to express their displeasure with Aldis.

Nick Aldis.

The SmackDown General Manager responded to this by confirming that the four-way road will continue – “an agreement has been reached” – and in fact we are getting a fun main event for the show: The Bloodline vs. AJ Styles & Randy Orton & Los Angeles Knight. With Reigns no longer on the show, Solo Sequa and Jimmy Uso will have to find a tag team partner or leave.

Heyman wandered around trying to find a partner for them, so he approached Carlito with an apple but he refused.

Later, he tried to woo Bobby Lashley, who made it clear that he only wanted to be in the ring with The Bloodline when he stood up to Reigns.

When it came time for Heyman to break the bad news that no one would help them, Jimmy said he was worried about that. Solo, the tough son of a gun, got right in his face and said “I’m not.” Naturally, Jimmy quickly changed his tune.

Not yet and all that.

Jimmy has become a bit of a comedic character and I’m not sure I mind that. The subject matter of Bloodline has been long in the tooth, and some of the comedic comedy works well for me.

What they ended up doing was Solo and Jimmy took out Randy Orton before the match even started, making it a straight tag team match in the end anyway. This was also noteworthy because the two remaining men had a grudge against each other. They certainly couldn’t get along.

In the end, it didn’t matter. Of course, Orton came back late in the match, got tagged in, ran wild, and eventually pinned Jimmy after an RKO to give the babyfaces the victory. They then all come together to place Sikoa on the announcer’s table and stand tall to close the show.

Hey, the babyfaces have to get their wins now because they sure won’t get them in the Rumble.

all the rest

  • The new Legado del Fantasma gets more spotlight and a proper introduction at this show, with Angel Garza and Humberto Carrillo showcased via a great video package and a match against LWO’s Joaquin Wilde and Cruz Del Toro. They had an interesting match, with Carlito arriving on the scene late to brawl with Santos Escobar in the back, allowing Garza to score a pin by grabbing the ropes. The group got off to a very good start.
  • Logan Paul had a pre-recorded promo where he threatened to sue Kevin Owens over his black eye by using the splint on his hand to punch him in the face. He also used this to make further threats about canceling the match if KO showed up with the cast. At one point, don’t worry, this guy called Owens a “little cheater, you little pumpkin-eating cheater.” I don’t know, man.
  • BUTCH still wants to be a lone wolf but Tyler Bate wants to bring back the British tough style again because this is their chance to do something. And then Pat mentioned that Butch needed to dig deep and look back to decide who he would be. What is this name? He didn’t say it, but it sure looks like the Bruiserweight could be making a comeback soon.
  • Bayley got her chance to take care of Bianca Belair, at the request of Iyo Sky last week, and she failed to do so, losing by pinfall after the kiss of death. At one point in the match, Bayley called for help and Damage CTRL simply stood there. He didn’t console her after that either. The breakup is getting ever closer but they are actually moving at a slow pace.
  • Kevin Owens got the chance to respond to Paul’s pre-tape with one of his own, scoffing at the idea of a lawsuit and instead offering a face-to-face showdown on next week’s “The Kevin Owens Show.” This is the second and final stop before the match. It should be fun!
  • Bobby Lashley & The Street Profits called out Karrion Kross and his new crew, but were reprimanded by a promo on Titantron where Kross simply revealed the mission statement and name of the group: The Final Covenant. amazing.
  • Carmelo Hayes was trying to give Nick Aldis something about the Royal Rumble when he was interrupted by Grayson Waller and Austin Theory. The Grimes match never happened, so Hayes offered to beat Grayson again. Instead, they set up a match with theory. Said match was moving along well until they reached a point off the top rope and both landed awkwardly on their heads. The referee immediately used an X, and the doctor declared the match. They drew attention to the fact that the match had to be stopped for the safety of their wrestlers while hoping for the best for them. It sure seemed like a bad landing, as far as WWE realized this was going to be the new norm moving forward. Instead of wrestlers being able to overcome bad injuries, we need to know that they will stop it and protect them and that is what we need to get used to. he deserves it.

This looked very much like a show treading water. It certainly wasn’t bad, there wasn’t much going on.
