Taproot Wizards, Bitcoin Ordinals Project Raised $7.5 Million Selling ‘Quantum Cats’ Collection

Taproot Wizards, which capitalized on last year’s craze in Bitcoin Ordinals sprites to raise $7.5 million, is now moving forward with its first set sale, Quantum Cats.

The series includes 3,333 cats, designed to honor a Bitcoin improvement proposal known as OP_CAT, according to a press release.

NFTs, sometimes known as “NFTs on Bitcoin,” became so popular after their invention by Casey Rodarmor, that transaction activity related to their minting created congestion on the Bitcoin blockchain, leading to higher fees.

Some longtime Bitcoin contributors have proposed various measures to block it, arguing that the network should be maintained for payments, though other voices have likened such efforts to censorship. Bitcoin miners have reaped a windfall from huge fees. Three photographs from the “BitcoinShrooms” group were recently sold at the esteemed auction house Sotheby’s for approximately $450,000.

Taproot Wizards was created by Udi Wertheimer and Eric Wall, who each have at least 100,000 followers on X (formerly Twitter).

Dan Held, Taproot Wizards’ fractional marketing manager, told CoinDesk in an email that this is the first group sale by the company. The first set minted was Taproot Wizards, but they were not released for sale.
