The first footage has been released for Back to Black, a new biopic about the late Amy Winehouse.
Starring “Industry” actress Marissa Abella as Winehouse and directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson (“Nowhere Boy,” “Fifty Shades of Grey”), “Back to Black” is executive produced by Nikki Kentish Barnes, Ron Halpern and Joe Naftalin. Studiocanal, Alison Owen and Debra Hayward for Monumental Pictures from a screenplay by Matt Greenhalgh (“Movie Stars Don’t Die in Liverpool”).
“Back to Black is an unprecedented glimpse into Amy Winehouse’s early rise to fame and the release of her groundbreaking studio album, Back to Black,” the record reads. “From Amy’s perspective, the film is an unapologetic look at the woman behind the phenomenon and the relationship that inspired one of the most legendary albums of all time.”
“I don’t write music to be famous,” Abella says in the trailer as the title track launches. “I write songs because I’m not doing what I would be doing if I didn’t.”
Jack O’Connell stars alongside Abella as Winehouse’s husband, Blake Fielder-Civil. Eddie Marsan plays Winehouse’s father, Mitch Winehouse, while Juliette Cowan plays Winehouse’s mother, Janice Winehouse Collins. Lesley Manville plays Cynthia Winehouse, Winehouse’s grandmother.
“Back to Black” marks the first biopic about the Winehouse family, whose most popular songs include titles like “Valerie,” “Back to Black” and “Rehab.” Following the singer’s death in 2011 at the age of 27 due to alcohol poisoning, several documentaries have emerged about her life and legacy, including the 2015 Academy Award-winning Best Feature Documentary Emmy, as well as the 2015 BBC television film Reclaiming. 2021. “Back to Black” received support from the Amy Winehouse Estate, Universal Music Group and Sony Music Publishing. The film is scheduled to hit theaters on May 10 through Focus Features.
