Does my insurance cover home and vehicle floods?

PROVIDENCE, Rhode Island (WPRI) — Many homes and cars were flooded in Rhode Island after Tuesday night’s major storm.

With flooding becoming more common in the state, AAA’s Chris DiMartino tells 12 News it’s important for homeowners to check their insurance policy.

“Most homeowners policies will not cover flood damage,” he said. “What you want to look at is whether you or your agent has purchased a flood insurance policy that specifically covers flood damage.”

Flood insurance is usually purchased through the government or specific flood insurance companies. Although they’re generally more expensive, DiMartino says they can save you money in the long run.

“You might pay anywhere from $500 to $1,500 for a flood policy, but if you live in a flood-prone area, it’s a very valuable policy,” he said.

It also doesn’t take much for a car to be damaged by a flood.

“It doesn’t take much — driving through deep water, or any type of water getting into a vehicle — for it to become inoperable,” DiMartino said.

He recommends people make sure they have comprehensive car insurance.

“Comprehensive coverage is coverage that will cover your car if it is damaged or completely destroyed due to flooding,” he said.

Comprehensive auto insurance also covers storm damage caused by falling trees, among other accidents.
