Nicole Kidman recalled the bittersweet moment when she won an Oscar in 2003, after her divorce from Tom Cruise.
The 56-year-old Australian actress won her first Academy Award for her role as Virginia Woolf in The Hours, shortly after finalizing her divorce from the Top Gun actor, 61, after 11 years of marriage.
“I was struggling with things in my personal life, but my professional life was going well,” she revealed to author Dave Karger in his new book, 50 Oscar Nights, according to People magazine, adding: “This is what happens, right?”
“I came home and ended up ordering takeout and eating it on the floor of the Beverly Hills Hotel. I sat on the floor of the hotel eating fries and a burger with my family and then I went to sleep. That’s when it hit me. I went, ‘I need to find my love; I need love in my life.’ Because that’s what it’s supposed to be when you say, “This is ours.”
“I went to bed alone; I was in bed before midnight. If I win again, I’m telling you, I’ll be gone for 24 hours.
While accepting her big win, she briefly broke down, telling the audience: “Russell Crowe said don’t cry when you get up there and now I’m crying,” and later manipulated her before she could finish her speech.
And then she wanted to go home.
“I’m not a fan of big parties, so I would skip the Vanity Fair party, and everyone would say, ‘You have to go.’ You have to walk through the party holding your Oscar,” she shared.
“That’s just schadenfreude, not humility,” I said. like what? You cannot walk while holding the award! This seems really inappropriate. They’re like, “This is what you do.”
However, she ended up attending the glitzy ceremony with an Oscar.
“I literally walked in, picked it up, and was completely overwhelmed, emotional, shaking, and I wasn’t enjoying it. I was almost apologetic, which is so stupid. I wish I could enjoy it more.”
Nicole’s big Oscar win came right after her highly publicized divorce from Cruise.
The couple married in 1990 before their shock split in 2001, which came as a surprise to fans.
Kidman is mother to daughter Isabella, 31, and son Connor, 28, with Cruise.
Connor was adopted by Kidman and the action star shortly after his birth in 1995, but the exact timeline remains unclear.
Sister Isabella was adopted by the couple three years ago in 1992.
After returning home from her Oscar win, Kidman went to sleep dreaming that one day she would be able to find love again.
Two years later, she began dating country singer Keith Urban, 56.
The couple married in 2006 and have two daughters, Sunday Rose, 14, and Faith Margaret, 12.
Last year, the couple celebrated their seventeenth wedding anniversary.
In July, she revealed the unique relationship rule that helps her keep the romance alive with Urban — they only communicate over the phone via call.
‘We never text each other, can you believe it?’ We started out that way – I said to her: ‘If you want to reach out to me, call me,’ she said on Something to Talk About on Sunday.
“I wasn’t really a texter.” I think he tried to text me a few times and I never responded. Then it was like this is so beautiful.
“If you really want to connect with me, you should call me. Everyone else we text with. That’s the one thing we don’t do.”
Although Kidman has yet to win another Oscar, she did take home a Golden Globe for Best Actress for her role in “Being the Ricardos” in 2022.
