Samsung’s new Transparent Micro-LED technology improves the image quality of transparent displays

Transparent video displays are nothing new, but improved picture quality in Samsung’s new technology could make them more attractive to viewers.

On Sunday at CES 2024, Samsung introduced the first transparent version of its Micro-LED display technology, which it claims is superior to other transparent displays. I personally reviewed the transparent display concepts at Samsung’s demo. I’ve reviewed hundreds of TVs, and in my short time with Samsung’s concept displays, the Micro-LED version actually looked the best, especially in terms of brightness and color.

Transparent OLED displays and even LCD displays have been around for a while, but Samsung says its Micro-LED display technology produces brighter, clearer images. And More transparent than current technology. This means that you should be able to see things on the other side more easily.

While the transparent display technology is cool, and could have some home benefits — imagine a transparent TV that actually disappears when not in use — Samsung’s first demonstration of transparent Micro-LED was focused on more commercial applications.

The company had set up transparent displays in front of a regular television set, showing images including a football match and fireworks. Meant to mimic the experience of sitting in a luxury box during a game, the windows overlooking the field were transparent with Micro-LED technology. Scores, replays and highlights can appear on the “windows” and add to the game experience without obscuring it.

Samsung uses standard opaque Micro-LED technology in its massive and expensive The Wall TVs, and some other companies including Sony and LG also use it. They are also present in very small displays, for example, this concept for contact lenses. Samsung says its transparent Micro-LED technology isn’t available on the market, so what I saw was basically a concept. I’m curious to see where the company takes this display technology next.
